The Bronze Age Roundhouse

This building represents a small roundhouse dated from between 2200 B.C. and 701 B.C. Hundreds of which can be found all over Dartmoor, sometimes individually and also grouped together inside boundary walls. Many of these settlements and roundhouses are part of  larger co-axial field systems possibly showing a flourishing agricultural community. Traditionally archaeologists have split these settlements into arable and pastoral communities.

This particular building is based on Hut 8 from Grimspound where the remains of twenty buildings surrounded by a substantial boundary wall can still be seen. This building and it’s surrounding wall are constructed from thirty two tonnes of granite sourced from a quarry on Bodmin Moor.

When finished it will represent a shepherds hut from around 1500 B.C.
