The Roman Workshop

This building represents a vernacular building from Roman London and is dated to around 200 A.D.

The specific evidence for this structure comes from an excavation called “The Poultry Dig” on Gresham Street in London and reflects the remains of several buildings found there. These buildings seem to have been used for crafts, industries and as shops.

The structure is timber framed using Oak and Sweet Chestnut timber gathered locally from the Cranborne Estate.

The walls are Hazel wattled, Oak lathed and covered with Lime render, while the roof uses original evidence for caulked vertical boarding covered with tarred fabric.

Some walls exhibit gladiatorial graffitti taken from surviving examples in Pompeii.

The building was completed in 2004 and was mainly built by students from Dorset Learning Centres.
